Nature learning is in session with the Canadian Museum of Nature’s workshops

OTTAWA, Ontario, Sept. 03, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Canadian Museum of Nature is pleased to announce the return of its popular on-site and virtual workshops for the 2026-2027 school year. These include a new virtual workshop about freshwater systems for students in Grades 7 to 9.

The museum’s virtual workshops on natural-history themes are offered free to schools across Canada thanks to support from donors and partners. They have proven to be popular, as museum educators delivered 503 virtual workshops during the 2025-26 school year, reaching over 10,000 students from all provinces and territories.

“Each of the workshops uses real specimens, videos, multimedia and guided activities by one of our science educators to provide an enriching experience on the theme being presented,” says Melanie Hall, the museum’s Vice-President of Experience and Engagement. The museum gratefully recognizes Polar Knowledge Canada as the lead supporter of all of its school workshops for the 2026-2027 school year.

The new Freshwater Systems Workshop, developed in partnership with AquaAction, will engage students to reflect about why fresh water matters, how pollution affects water quality and ecosystems, and how individuals, including themselves, can help protect this vital resource.

This new workshop expands the museum's roster of virtual workshop themes, which include rocks and minerals, coastal sea life, and Arctic ecosystems. Each workshop is designed to meet curriculum objectives for specific grade levels in each province and territory.

The museum also offers four on-site workshops at the museum in downtown Ottawa.

• Registration is now open for all workshops for the 2026-2027 school year.
• All workshops are offered in either English or French.
• Virtual workshops are free for all publicly funded schools across Canada.
• Bursaries are available for equity-seeking schools for admission of facilitated school experiences on-site at the museum.
• For the 2025-26 school year, more than 20,000 students attended either one of the museum’s on-site or virtual workshops.
• The Arctic Ecosystems Virtual Workshop was developed in partnership with the Arctic Eider Society.
